5 things you must have to sell successfully with a podcast

One of the ways podcasting can help independent artists do music full-time is that it makes selling stuff to your followers a lot easier and more natural.

No one looks at you as a “sell-out” when you pitch things on your show.

However, to sell successfully and consistently with a podcast, you need to have five key things in place, and in this post, I’m going to talk about what they are so that you don’t struggle to sell to your followers.

1. A podcast host

The first thing you’re going to need when you sell with a podcast is a podcast host.

This is simply the person or persons that host the podcast.

And by the host I mean, talking about various topics on the show, interviewing guests, interacting with fans, asking them to buy whatever you might be selling, stuff like that.

In most cases, this person is going to be you. You’re going to be the host of your own podcast unless you decide to host it with a friend.

2. A product or service

The next thing you’re going to need is something to sell to your followers and this could be a product like merchandise, a membership site like a Patreon account, or both.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of membership sites as they guarantee you a steady income every month amongst other things.

Also, they are a very natural and easy thing to sell on a podcast.

All you have to do is simply ask your followers to join your Patreon either at the beginning or end of the show.

I’ll be making a post about this in the future so make sure you’re subscribed to the list to get notified when I publish it.

3. A Podcast

The next thing you’re going to need when you sell with a podcast is a podcast itself.

That’s right, your own show.

And it should be a podcast designed with selling in mind.

As much as you want to create valuable content for your followers, you ultimately want to make money as well – enough money to do music full-time.

So you want to make sure that your podcast is designed to help you do just that.

This is why special attention should be paid to designing such a show and that exactly one area I help my clients with.

4. A podcast selling process

Aside from having a podcast, you’re going to need to have some kind of a system in place to sell stuff consistently with your show.

This is known as the podcast selling process and it’s simply a way of turning a follower into your customer.

With a podcast selling process, selling becomes predictable and as a result, you’ll be able to sell more to your followers and make more money as well.

I’m going to be talking a lot more about this in future posts as it’s super important to understand so make sure you subscribe to the mailing list to get updates.

5. Ideal followers

The last thing you’re going to need when you sell with your podcast is a bunch of followers.

And not just any kind of followers.

You need to right people following you otherwise you’re going to struggle to sell anything at all.

These are known as ideal followers in business, and they are the people that believe in your mission and would do anything they possibly can to help you achieve it, including buying your stuff.
